Manja's Rice and Fish meal...off Car Street, Mangalore...

Fish is my weakness. Especially when it tastes as fresh as the sea itself. If you are the types who don't really care about the ambience, and love to dig into the authentic side of local cuisine, this little blink and miss joint off Car street, locally called Manja's, is the place to be at. The guy doesn't even have a name plate or a board. From the looks of it, the place was a very old house, which has now been converted into a very humble eatery. Sharing long tables, plastic stools (probably even broken) and claustrophobic air...doesn't really sound like fun now does it? But wait. Wait till the sweaty waiters bring out a humongous plate filled with rice and some fish curry and veggies, and you'll know why you are there! The fried fish sells out first. Get there by noon, and you'll be lucky to find some Surmai/King fish or pomfrets. We tried the Pomfrets masala fry, with deep fried squid and prawns too. You'll be astonished with the bills you'll pay too. Back in big cities, you'd almost just get a bottle of mineral water in big restaurants for the price you pay for a full meal here! And the best part? The billing is totally based on faith and trust. You eat inside, you walk out to the billing counter and you tell the cashier what you ate! Guess that's some sweet conscience for dessert!
